This spring, more than 240 Pro-Kid organizations signed on to this letter in support of SB 428: Youth Mental Health First Aid, which would require training school staff in youth mental health first aid. SB 428 was passed by the California State Legislature.
In September, more than 150 Pro-Kid organizations signed on to a letter urging the Governor to sign SB 428 into law and ensure that a percentage of school staff is trained in youth mental health first aid, so they can be equipped with the vital skills needed to support adolescents suffering from mental health or substance use issues, which includes knowing how to safely de-escalate crisis situations.
Despite receiving a great level of support from key stakeholders and the larger community, SB 428 was ultimately vetoed by Governor Newsom.
